When is the right time to hire an IT resource?

Hi, I'm Wade Yeaman with Fluid IT Services. And the question I get all the time is how do I know when it's the right time to hire an IT person?

What a great question. Oftentimes, this is driven by many factors-- the business is growing so fast, there's no way an outside vendor can keep up. Or there's no way a vendor can understand our business.

And oftentimes, they just hand it to whoever can take it, like the office manager.

Fact is a lot of times these don't really work for our clients and for many small or mid-sized companies.

And really, the challenges related more to how can you properly align your technology to your business so that the technology is really working for your business and enabling your business, rather than it be viewed as a necessary evil.

We really need to step back from the issue and look at what does our business need.

A trap many organizations fall into is one that we show up here, where they feel like they need to get someone on site and hire someone so they want to spend as little money as possible. And they get the guy over here who has basic brake-fix skills. And oftentimes, after a few months, you realize he cannot handle the higher end things, the things that require more skill set. And so he's really not even able to fulfill the need at all.

And in fact, you get frustrated because he can't actually fix a lot of your problems, but in his effort to try to please you, he attempts to do them and he actually breaks things in the process.

We see that all the time.

The flip side of that is you go up here and you go hire the guy with the big brain. And he's the rocket scientist. He knows how to do everything. You spend big bucks.

The problem with that is he finds out that about half his time or more is spent down here working on the break-fix, so he gets dissatisfied. Doesn't want to work there. There's really no career path.

And that's really the problem with small to mid-sized organizations is they're not geared towards having a career path for an IT person and they really don't have the ability in house to manage that kind of role anyway.

The reality is trying to hire someone really isn't a good fit for the company, unless there's a very specific business need. An example of that would be if you're a company who has developed their own software for their business, you may need to hire a programmer for that software.

Or let's say, you have a proprietary service regulatory reasons say that you must have in-house staff, those are very specific business reasons to hire someone in-house.

Outside of that, you really need to look at what am I getting out of my IT staff. And typically, you're going to get a lot more bang for your buck in the model where you bring someone like Fluid in.

We're going to be able to spread out and provide the resources you need when you need them, and you're not going to have to spend at all this money and, you're going to have all this blended into a much lower cost, and you're only going to get them when you need them. It really comes back to understanding your business and what your business needs are. And then looking at the staffing needs for IT based on your business, if you have unique needs when you need to hire someone, let's do that.

And sometimes we have clients that say I want to hire someone simple because I want to have someone on site that reports to me. And if that's a good enough business reason and you want to cost justify it, that's fine.

But outside of that, you really need to really take a look at your business and your technology needs, and have that drive the decision, rather than the knee jerk reaction related to a lot of the symptoms we mention.
